For progressive metal fans, October 23, 2023, marked a historic moment. Dream Theater announced the reunion with their legendary drummer Mike Portnoy, ending a 13-year absence. While fans already knew Portnoy was collaborating on a new album, the band surprised everyone by unveiling a special celebration: the Dream Theater 40th Anniversary Tour.

I was fortunate enough to catch the Milan leg of the tour in late October this year. As it was one of the first shows of the tour, there was little information on social media about what to expect. What we did know, however, was that it would be an epic three-hour show—a marathon of progressive metal magic.

With all due respect to Mike Mangini (who admirably filled Portnoy’s shoes during his absence), many fans, including myself, had missed Portnoy’s creativity and the sense of "home" he brought as a founding member of the band. Needless to say, anticipation for the night was at an all-time high.

Is there a better way to kick off a 3-hour prog concert than with "Metropolis - Part 1: The Miracle and the Sleeper"? As the crowd waited in front of the curtain, the song began with a synchronized LED light show. When the curtain dropped to reveal the band playing that iconic riff, the energy in the room erupted. From the very first moment, James LaBrie commanded the stage with stunning presence and vocals.

I’ll never forget closing my eyes to sing along to "Strange Déjà Vu" from Metropolis Pt. 2. Every concertgoer has those fleeting moments that turn into lifelong memories, and for me, it was these lines:
“I just can’t help myself
I’m feeling like I’m going out of my head
Uncanny strange déjà vu
But I don’t mind
I hope to find the truth.”

A few songs later, some of my personal favorites "Hollow Years" and "Constant Motion" set the stage ablaze, amplified by mesmerizing visuals in the background. These moments reminded me why Dream Theater’s live performances are in a league of their own. Their incredible musicianship, paired perfectly complemented by cutting-edge visuals, is an experience that immerses all your senses. Portnoy’s drumming, in particular, felt like the beating heart of the band, bringing a depth and energy that’s hard to put into words.

As the night progressed, we were treated to a masterclass in progressive metal storytelling. Songs like "Under a Glass Moon" and "This Is the Life" offered the perfect blend of techniques and emotional resonance. Dream Theater has always had this strange ability to take you on a journey—whether it's through soaring solos, haunting melodies, or thunderous riffs, every note seems to have a purpose.

One of the most unforgettable parts of the show was their performance of "Octavarium." This epic piece is not just a song but an odyssey. Witnessing it live was a spiritual experience. The band’s synergy during this track was palpable, with each member contributing to the intricate layers that make this song a fan favorite. Jordan Rudess’s keyboard wizardry shone here, crafting a sonic masterpiece of his own.

The encore was a dream come true for any long-time fan. Starting with "Home" and culminating in "The Spirit Carries On" and "Pull Me Under," the band ensured the audience left on a high note. "The Spirit Carries On" was particularly moving, as the entire venue sang along, creating a moment of unity and shared love for this legendary band. And, of course, "Pull Me Under" brought the energy back to a fever pitch, leaving us all wanting more.

Dream Theater’s Milan show was a reminder of why they’re considered one of the greatest progressive metal bands of all time. It’s rare to see a band that’s been around for four decades still performing at such a high level, with so much passion and precision.

If you have the chance to catch them on this tour (the show goes on in the United States in 2025), don’t hesitate. Whether you’re a die-hard fan or a newcomer to their music, this is a show that will stay with you long after the final note fades. Dream Theater’s 40th Anniversary Tour is no exception to their timeless creative acts— a celebration of everything that makes them extraordinary.
