A bunch of great lyrics and scattered British slang, this is Arctic Monkeys' AM

Hey everybody, this is Tim, I was asked to review of one of my favourite albums and I picked 'AM' by the Arctic Monkeys! I hope you enjoy 🐒

Songs for the time-capsule

- Do I Wanna Know?

- Why'd You Only Call Me When You're High?

- Arabella

This album is from UK band Arctic Monkeys and was their fifth studio album. I’m usually a sucker for pop and electric indie, which isn’t the vibe of this album at all, but I found it so infectious and was super happy to see it return to the charts ahead of the release of their new album ‘The Car’. I love how prominent lead singer Alex Turner’s accent is in his vocals, and find it injects every lyric with so much more meaning and emotion. It’s the first track, ‘Do I Wanna Know’, that has my favourite lyrics.

Have you no idea that you’re in deep?

I dreamt about you nearly every night this week

Lyrics like this paint the picture of a vulnerable lover, unsure if their feelings are shared. They say the person they’re speaking to is ‘in deep’ but it seems they’re projecting their feelings, as you get the impression it’s instead the speaker that is struggling to handle the strength of their feelings. This profound message, however, is lightened with scattered examples of British slang (‘summat’ to mean ‘something’, ‘pucker up’ to mean ‘get ready for a kiss’) which bring a more playful mood, countering the slight darkness of some of the other lyrics. The effect is one of pure authenticity and rawness which I looooove.

The album in general has a bunch of great lyrics, and I highly recommend you all take a look/listen!
